About Me

Have you ever had a moment where you sit in front of your computer and wonder how it works? Well I did, in January 2017, 8 months into my first job out of college, as a full-time video editor.

There are geniuses across the globe that build programs and the computers that run them, and here I was, working in Premiere everyday, with no idea what is going on when I hit the spacebar and playback the video…

To be fair, I still have no clue what goes into the C++ and who knows what other languages that form Premiere Pro, but I found myself wishing I wasn’t such a slave to the program. I wanted to take it under my control, and make it work for me, specific to my workflow. So I started Googling around.

After building my first couple of tools, I got a taste of the efficiency that could be created. Processes that I did repeatedly over and over every day, could be reduced to less than a second, with more accuracy than I could hope from myself. But it took me forever to reach a point where I was confident to build my own tools, and introduce them to my team at work. There was a lack of resources and a community on the internet, a community that could be found easily if you were talking about scripting in After Effects, Photoshop, etc.

A blog sounded like a cheesy way to make this happen, so here I am, hoping that with every post and video, I can learn from people watching, just as much as they can learn from me.

My name is Eli Portell. Born in Texas, raised in Alaska, and educated in Colorado.
